Ken Sherwood

Professor Ken Sherwood is a tenured instructor at Los Angeles City College where he’s been on the faculty since 1995; he was honored as LACC Teacher of the Year in 2000. Currently, Professor Sherwood serves as President of the Academic Senate and is past director of the LACC Honors Program. Prior to joining the faculty at City, he taught at various colleges including Mt. San Antonio College, East Los Angeles College, Cerritos College, Pasadena City College, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Los Angeles, Occidental College, and Miami University (OH).

Since his arrival at LACC, Professor Sherwood has shown exemplary leadership in coaching and directing LACC’s nationally ranked and award-winning debate team. During the last 15 years, LACC debaters have been recruited and offered scholarships by some of the top colleges and universities in the country. In 1996, during his first year at LACC, the team qualified for the National Debate Tournament. At that time, LACC was only the second community college in the 50-year history of the NDT to qualify. LACC is one of only a handful of community colleges in California that sponsors a policy debate program.

Professor Sherwood is a strong advocate for college debate because he believes that the program is one of the most important activities in which a student can participate—particularly those students who want to attend law school or graduate school. Debate experience is often a major factor in admissions to law schools and graduate programs and often leads to significant scholarship opportunities in graduate school.

Professor Sherwood earned his B.S. in Organizational Communication from California State Polytechnic University-Pomona, and his M.A. in Speech Communication from Miami University (OH).
