Collegian Journalist Wins National Award

Melissa Breccia is a journalism student at LACC who has already left her mark in just two years. Attending a creative and performing arts high school, Melissa developed an interest in the arts at a young age.  Melissa came to Los Angeles from Philadelphia at the age of 19, leaving behind all of her friends and family back home.  Although difficult, Melissa knew that she had to make the move to Los Angeles in order to break into the entertainment industry.  Luckily for Melissa, her time at LACC has proved successful for her career goals.

After starting LACC in 2013, Melissa joined The Collegian and volunteered at the Los Angeles Press Club with encouragement from one of her professors. Her time at the Press Club has allowed her to develop her skills and work on several award banquets including the 2015 Eighth Annual National Arts and Entertainment Journalism Awards.  Not only did Melissa get to work on the event, she also received a nomination for her article, “Art ‘Scholarship Show’ Presents Dynamic Exhibit” in the category for Best Arts and Entertainment News Story.  Melissa received second place for her piece, which is a great accomplishment considering that the student categories were just added this year.  Breccia attended the event on Sunday, December 6 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel along with LACC students Tomas Rodriguez and Jessica Brecker, who also received awards.  The event honored special guests Tavis Smiley for his career achievements, Joe Mantega for his work with Veterans, and Bob Barker for his impact on television and animal rights.

Melissa plans on staying at LACC one more semester before transferring to California State University Northridge. She intends to remain in Los Angeles to pursue her dreams of screenwriting for the film industry.  Melissa is a bright young lady with a promising future ahead of her.  We wish her all of the best!
