FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW MANY SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE?

There is one application to fill out that will display all available scholarships online. Some scholarships will require a paper application, which can be picked up in the Foundation office or printed from the “Apply for Scholarships” page.

I AM AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT – CAN I APPLY?

International students are open to apply but residents will be given priority.

I AM A PART-TIME STUDENT or NEW STUDENT – CAN I APPLY?

Yes, but most scholarships require students to be full-time (12 units minimum) and to have already completed at least 12 units at LACC.

IF THE REQUIRED G.P.A. IS 3.6 FOR A SPECIFIC SCHOLARSHIP AND I HAVE A 3.5, SHOULD I STILL APPLY?

Yes! You may qualify for other scholarships that have a lower GPA requirement. Remember, we only have one application for all available scholarships. If you don’t meet the criteria exactly for a particular scholarship, you might qualify for at least one other.

I DON’T RECEIVE FINANCIAL AID. WHAT SHOULD I UPLOAD IN PLACE OF MY FINANCIAL AID AWARD LETTER?

Instead of uploading your Financial Aid Award Summary, you can upload a printout of your BOG Fee Waiver or upload a Word Document or PDF that states why you are not receiving Financial Aid. Please include details about your financial situation (employment situation, number of dependents, etc.) then the scholarship committee can evaluate your financial need.

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY QUESTIONS AT THE END OF THE APPLICATION?

The questions on the fourth and fifth page of the application are supplementary questions. Some of the available scholarships are aimed at specific groups (nursing students, the unemployed, etc.) and require additional information.

WHEN WILL I HEAR IF I HAVE BEEN SELECTED FOR A SCHOLARSHIP?

After the deadline, applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee. There is not a set date that candidates will be awarded, but we will notify awardees as soon as a decision is made. Please double check your contact information so that we can notify you of your award.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A LOTTERY SCHOLARSHIP AND A MERIT SCHOLARSHIP?

Most scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit; thus, students distinguished by academic excellence, participation in extracurricular activities and involvement in community service have the best chance at receiving one of these rewards. Lottery scholarships, on the other hand, are chosen at random, meaning every student who applies has an equal chance of winning.

HOW DO I QUALIFY FOR MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS?

Merit-based scholarships are based on prior academic performance. Other criteria may include leadership, involvement in activities, geographical background, ethnic background, intended major, and career goals. Carefully read the eligibility requirements and selection criteria for each scholarship.

HOW DO I QUALIFY FOR NEED-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS?

To be eligible for need-based LACC Foundation scholarships, you must attach a copy of your Need Summary from the SIS Portal. The attachments must show “Remaining Need” for the current school year. The financial aid office determines the cost of attendance and your financial need. If you are determined to have financial need, you may be eligible for some need-based scholarships (if you do not have this form available, attach a document stating why you do not have Financial Aid and what is your financial need based on living and school expenses).

HOW DOES THE LACC FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE CHOOSE A WINNER?

Each scholarship has different requirements. The recipient must meet all of the standard criteria required for the scholarship, but must also distinguish themselves from the rest of the applicants. If you are interested in being awarded a specific scholarship, read about that scholarship to determine what exactly the scholarship donor is looking for and emphasize your relevant qualities in your essay.

WHO SHOULD I ASK TO WRITE MY LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION?

You should ask your professors and/or a community service contact (if applicable). Do NOT ask a friend or family member. A letter of recommendation is like professional reference; choose someone who can articulate your strengths and praise your accomplishments.

DOES THE AMOUNT I RECEIVE IN SCHOLARSHIPS AFFECT MY ELIGIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL AID?

Most likely, yes. the LACC Foundation gives your award information to the Financial Aid Office. When this happens, the school financial aid office will adjust your unmet financial need accordingly.
