Women’s History Month: LACC Iconic Alumnae
In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Los Angeles City College Foundation recognizes our own LACC alumnae for their influential accomplishments and career success.
Florence LaRue
Singer and member of the 5th Dimension, Florence LaRue was born on February 4, 1942 in Plainfield, New Jersey. LaRue studied dance and violin. LaRue moved to Los Angeles, California, earning her A.A. degree from Los Angeles City College, and then received her B.A. degree in education from California State College in Los Angeles.
LaRue’s has achieved 14 Gold records, 6 Platinum records, 6 GRAMMY Awards, and numerous other awards, LaRue continues to surprise her fans with her talent, stamina and endless energy. LaRue’s talents include being a speaker, vocalist, actress, mother, playwright and humanitarian.

Terry McMillan
Terry McMillan (born October 18, 1951) is an American novelist. Her work centers around the experiences of Black women in the United States. Terry McMillan was born and raised in Port Huron, Michigan, and discovered her passion for literature while shelving books at the local library. Terry’s signature humor, wisdom, and warmth made her book, Waiting to Exhale.

Lee Broda
Lee Broda is one of the most inventive independent women producers in Hollywood. Broda founded LB Entertainment, which develops, finances, and produces major independent films, she has executed over thirty five films to success.
Broda’s films have premiered in the world’s top film festivals including Sundance, Venice, Toronto, Tribeca, SXSW, BFI, and New York Film Festival and have been distributed worldwide, garnering international recognition, and winning many awards.

Ruta Lee
Ruta Lee (born Ruta Mary Kilmonis; May 30, 1935) is a Canadian-American actress and dancer of Lithuanian descent. On March 1, 1948, Lee moved to Los Angeles and graduated in 1954 from Hollywood High School and began studying acting and appearing in school plays.[4][5] She attended both Los Angeles City College and the University of California at Los Angeles.
Lee is best known for her roles in films including Billy Wilder‘s crime drama Witness for the Prosecution and Stanley Donen‘s musical comedy Funny Face, and also is remembered for her guest appearance in a 1963 episode of Rod Serling‘s sci-fi series The Twilight Zone called “A Short Drink from a Certain Fountain“. Lee has appeared in dozens of guest-starring roles on television. For many years, she seemed to be everywhere on the small screen.
